Coralie Edwards graduated with an Advanced Diploma in Ceramics from Perth Technical College Art Department in 1984. Coralie then worked in the Northfolk Studios, a cooperative based workshop for recently graduated students from Curtin University and Perth Technical College. In 1988 she established Basic Elements studio in East Perth with Maurice Sawyer.Since that time Coralie has had many solo and group exhibitions, winning awards throughout Australia. You can see many of her recent works in her picture gallery. Coralie works with local communities and arts groups to develop vibrant and dynamic art installations based on murals and sculptural forms. These projects are run in conjunction with Visual Arts Foundation. Coralie also teaches ceramics at Central TAFE and Swan TAFE Contact Coralie for any other information you may want.
Maurice Sawyer graduated from the Western Australian Institute of Technology (now Curtin University) in 1979. He was apprenticed with Doug Alexander at Cuppacumbalong Pottery in the ACT for two years and after Doug's death continued the apprenticeship with John Dermer at Kirby's Flat Pottery at Yackandandah, Victoria. In 1983 Maurice worked with Anak Agung Ng Agung Oka at Jati Agung Keramik under the patronage of the Governor, the late Ide Bagus Mantra, in Bali. After working in Bali, Maurice worked for the Australian Embassy based in Jakarta. Seconded to the Balai Besar Keramik in Bandung, he travelled extensively throughout the archipelago, an experience that has been a strong impetus for Basic Elements.Maurice has been teaching the Indonesian language for over fifteen years.
